Supplemental Security Income (SSI) - Disability Based
Qualifications: Based on need, must have disability, under age 65, no more than $2,000 in resources.
Supplemental Security Income is a needs-based program for individuals under age 65 with a disability that is expected to last more than 12 months. You cannot have more than $2,000 in resources (i.e. money in the bank, or other assets). If you are married, you cannot have more than $3,000 in resources. You are allowed to have 1 car and 1 home. Your current income cannot be more than $1,470 (This amount increases every year). Blind or hearing-impaired individuals cannot make more than $2,460 per person.

Qualifications: Must be age 65 or older, cannot have more than $2,000 in resources.
If you are age 65 or older, and do not have the work credits, you may qualify for aged-based retirement. You cannot have more than $2,000 in resources (I.E. Money in the bank or other assets). If you are married, you cannot have more than $3,000 in resources. You may have 1 home and 1 car. Your current monthly income cannot be more than $1,470 (This amount increases every year). Blind or hearing-impaired individuals cannot make more than $2,460 per month.

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)
Qualifications: Must be over the age of 18, and must have a disability that is expected to last more than 12 months
This is a disability application. You must have recent medical history documenting a mental or physical disability that is expected to las more than 12 months and impairs your daily activities. You can have unlimited resources as long as you have the proper amount of work credits. You must have at least 20 credits in the last 10 years before you stopped working because of your disability. 20 work credits typically equate to 5 years. Meaning you must have worked within the last 5 years to qualify for disability. If you are under age 65 and you do not have enough work credits, consider using the SSI application.

Social Security Retirement
Qualifications: For those who have worked, there are no income or resource limits.
This application is for individuals aged 62 and up, who have received at least 40 work credits. Typically, that is 10 years. Any person who has worked for more than 10 years may qualify for retirement. Work does not have to be consecutive. There are no income resource limits. Your assets will not affect this application. If you do not have enough work credits and you are over age 65, you can apply for Age Based Supplemental Income (SSI). Applying for retirement at age 62 is considered early retirement and will result in receiving less that your full retirement amount. Most people qualify for full retirement at age 65 to 67.
