What Is CalFresh?
CalFresh is a supplemental food program to help qualifying low-income individuals and families buy the food they need to stay healthy. It is California’s version of the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formally known as Food Stamps.

Monthly dollars on an EBT debit card to buy fresh and packaged groceries at stores like Albertsons, Vons, Walmart, Aldi, Amazon, and farmer's markets.

Use your benefits to buy seeds and plants to grow your own food.

Some stores also offer free home delivery.

Use CalFresh at Participating Restaurants
Seniors (60+), people experiencing homelessness, and people with disabilities can also use their CalFresh EBT card to purchase hot or prepared food at participating restaurants such as: Everytable, Wingstop, Subway, Pizza Hut, El Pollo Loco, Fat Burger, KFC, and many more.

Who Is Eligible for CalFresh?
CalFresh is available to individuals and families with low incomes. Citizens and legal immigrant California residents are eligible. CalFresh is not part of the Public Charge test and will NOT affect your immigration status. Undocumented immigrants are usually not eligible, but they can apply for their U.S. citizen or legal resident children.
Who May Qualify?
CalFresh is available to many types of households, including:
Families with children.

Working Individuals

Seniors and people with disabilities

Students who meet requirements

Some households with mixed immigration status

Are There Any Concessions?
-
People who receive SSI/SSP do qualify for CalFresh, and so may other household members.
-
The federal unemployment boost doesn’t count toward people’s income when they apply for CalFresh, making more jobless people eligible..
-
Households must meet the “net income” test, which takes into account expenses for shelter, medical bills, utilities, and childcare.
-
If you previously applied and were unsuccessful, try again. New legislation has increased access, and you may now be eligible.
How Much CalFresh Benefits Can A Household Receive?

The amount of CalFresh benefits a household can receive depends on household size, income, and expenses. Certain expenses (rent, childcare, utility bills, etc.) are deducted from income to help you qualify and can increase your benefits. The minimum CalFresh allotment for a household of 1–2 people is $25.
* Actual amount depends on your specific case situation.
(Amounts effective October 1, 2026, through September 30, 2027.)
